The OLPC aims to provide laptops to children in developing countries. They have developed their own rugged (and wind-up...) laptop. It was originally called the $100 laptop, and though they didn't quite achieve that cost, they did create a remarkably cheap and very sophisticated laptop. It has a better display, battery life, and wi-fi range than any laptop you have ever used. It also works as a tablet PC.
The laptop is specially designed for children in a learning environment, everything from the keyboard to the software. Actually it works great for adults too, but it's targeted at kids.
It is already out in the field in Africa and South America. Here is a picture of it at work:
As a way of raising money for the project, they run a system where you can buy one for yourself, but you donate another to a child in a developing country. So, buy 2, get one. That's what the Amazon link is to.
