I went to the Tri-Pride AGM in Waterloo today. They are the local group that coordinate Waterloo Region's gay pride march, and do some gay advocacy work. The AGM was all of 15 mins, followed by a movie (we were in one of the local cinemas). The choice of the movie was Billy Elliot, which I thought was maybe a little odd. It's not a movie I'd consider particularly gay at all. Gay friendly certainly, but not gay; and I guess it says something about this region that it got chosen for the event.

To be fair, it is a great movie, if only because I recognize so many locations. Even my university is visible (briefly) in one shot, as they cross Middlesbrough's Transporter Bridge. The movie is definitely getting old: the streets in Easington Colliery where it was filmed have been demolished, and the bus station is now Newcastle University's Business School. The coal mine featured still exists, but is closed, and all that remains of Lynemouth Colliery is some railway sidings and coal storage for the power station next door.
